Finishes for leather shoes: elegance and craftsmanship

Kabundji Editorial · 4 min read

Finish isn't colour. Finish is the surface — the way the leather takes light and responds to wear. Two shoes in the same dye can live very different lives depending on how they are finished.

Box calf

The standard, for good reason. Smooth, firm, finely grained, ages gracefully. Buff with a brush, cream once a month, polish twice a year. Works with everything from a dark suit to clean chinos.

Calf suede

Nap side of the hide, treated for water repellence. Softer impression than calf, reads less formal. Brush after every wear; protect with a silicone-free water-repellent spray; treat stains early. Looks wonderful for ten years if you respect the brush.

Scotch grain (pebble grain)

A stamped-in texture. Hides scratches, sheds water, pairs with tweed. Slightly less formal than smooth calf. A Derby in scotch grain might be the most forgiving shoe you can own.

Museum calf (see also the finishing article)

Unevenly dyed calfskin that looks like it already lived a life. Divisive when new, beloved after six months. Creams and conditioners deepen the effect — don't fight the unevenness, feed it.

Shell cordovan

Membrane from the rump of a horse, not technically leather in the usual sense. Almost impossibly durable, patinates instead of creasing, takes months to break in. Buy one pair in your lifetime and it will outlive the lifetime.

Patent

High-gloss resin surface. Only for evening, only for events. Wipe with a damp cloth. Crack if you bend them hard.

Exotic leathers

Crocodile, alligator, ostrich, peccary. A category of their own — collectors, evening, sometimes bespoke. Treat with the conditioner specified by the tannery, not the one you use on calf.
